Matthew Tiessen is an Associate Professor in the School of Professional Communication at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). He is also a Faculty Associate with TMU's and York University's Graduate Program in Communication and Culture. Matthew was Graduate Program Director of the Masters of Professional Communication Program (MPC) 2018-22 and a TMU Senator from 2019-21.
Matthew received a SSHRC Insight Grant (2017-present) and a SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2013-16) in the area of "Digital Economy" in support of his research in the area of visual communication and digital culture. His research focuses on the ways mobile technologies are used by governments, corporations, and individuals to govern, manage, and enhance everyday activities. Matthew's interdisciplinary research and publishing also focuses on visual communication and design, money and power, and critical information studies.
