
About Matthew Tiessen
Matthew Tiessen is an Associate Professor in the School of Professional Communication (ProCom) in the Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) at Ryerson University (Toronto). He is also a Research Associate at Ryerson's Infoscape Research Lab: Centre for the Study of Social Media (founded and directed by Dr. Greg Elmer) and a Faculty Associate with Ryerson and York University's Graduate Program in Communication and Culture. Matthew is also the Graduate Program Director of the Masters of Professional Communication Program (MPC) in ProCom.
Matthew received a SSHRC Insight Grant (2017-present) and a SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2013-16) in the area of "Digital Economy" in support of his research and publishing in the area of visual communication and digital culture. His SSHRC-funded research focuses on the ways mobile screen-based technologies are increasingly being used by governments, corporations, and professional organizations to develop algorithmically driven logics and platforms to govern and enhance everyday activities. Matthew's interdisciplinary research and publishing also focuses on visual communication and design, affect and aesthetic theory, money and power, and critical information studies.
As a visual artist and designer with an Honours BFA in Fine Arts (studio) Matthew has created oil paintings, illustrations, caricatures, logo designs, and websites for clients, private collections, and a range of community and scholarly initiatives. His artwork has been featured in group exhibitions, most notably at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Alberta.
In 2013, Matthew completed a SSHRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Ryerson's Infoscape Research Lab: Centre for the Study of Social Media. Prior to his SSHRC postdoc Matthew's doctoral research on art, affect, ethics, and creativity was funded by a Killam Memorial Scholarship and a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship.
